Variations and Substitutions

This refreshing recipe is just the start of your cucumber margarita journey.

  • In addition to muddled cucumbers, use cucumber tequila or make your own infused tequila.
  • Skip the agave to make yours a skinny cucumber margarita.
  • Consider lemon juice for muddling to add an extra layer of citrus flavors and brighten the margarita.
  • Add even more layers of complexity by using mezcal instead of tequila.
  • Use jalapeño cucumber tequila for a spicy spin.

The classic margarita garnish uses a lime wheel or wedge, and most cucumber margaritas will add a cucumber wheel or ribbon to the classic. You can use a tajin rim for a spicy touch if you're feeling adventurous. If you're looking for a classic or simple cucumber garnish, using just a cucumber wheel or two or piercing several pieces of cucumber on a skewer is a great look. To add a pop of color, consider adding a lime or lemon ribbon or twist.

About the Cucumber Margarita

If storebought cucumber tequila isn't an option, you can easily infuse your own. Start by cleaning two medium cucumbers thoroughly, then thinly slice both into wheels. Add the cucumber wheels to a large resealable jar or bottle. From there, add 750mL of tequila to the cucumbers. Seal the glass containers and store them in a cool, dry place for approximately three to seven days. After the time has passed, simply strain the tequila, and store it in a glass bottle or jar and discard the cucumbers. Or enjoy a tequila cucumber snack.

To make your cucumber margarita a lighter version of the classic, you can puree two peeled cucumbers until liquified. Strain the cucumber puree through a fine-mesh strainer, discarding the solids. Then add this to your tequila and lime juice with ice. Shake it up and serve as you would a classic cucumber margarita.

A Refreshing Twist

A cucumber margarita whispers refreshing, murmurs about those early Tuesday spring afternoons, hums about those sweltering summer Saturday nights. It soothes the soul in those chilly winter days. Whenever or however you're enjoying a cucumber margarita, listen to its soothing flavors.
